Writing Retreats and Slow Travel

Mary and Wayne Sharnick have traveled extensively in Italy since 2002, and six times have led groups of secondary-school students to Rome, Venice, Florence, the Amalfi Coast, and numerous hill towns, including Mary’s own family’s, Frigento. In addition, they have led groups of secondary-school students in domestic travel. Mary has done extensive research for her novels in both Italy, New Orleans, and Vermont. She and Wayne offer customized tours for individuals, families, and groups of writers and students. Fees to be determined by customized tours.

I have been lucky to travel to Italy with Mary and Wayne three times, and each trip was incredible. The itineraries were designed specifically for the group and the location, with busy schedules that maximized our time yet allowed for flexibility to relax at a café or explore on our own. Because of Mary and Wayne’s extensive knowledge of Italian language, culture, and history, they created some of my richest and most memorable travel experiences. The itineraries always included the must-see attractions, but the trips were not “touristy” – there were always a few activities that were off the beaten path. With Mary and Wayne, I learned something new at every turn, and I felt more immersed in the culture than I imagined possible.

Mary and Wayne Sharnick are an absolute joy to work with. I allowed my teenage daughter to travel to Europe on two separate occasions with the Sharnick’s. I would not hesitate to do so again. Mr. and Mrs. Sharnick treat every child who travels with them like their own. They provide oversight and structure, while still allowing the students the independence they longed for. My daughter frequently refers to the two trips as the best weeks of her life. Traveling with the Sharnick’s ensures a historic and cultural education, lessons which cannot be taught in a classroom. She learned through experience, and has since become an avid traveler. The Sharnick’s were organized. The agenda was well planned. Most important, my daughter was safe with them. I will forever be in the Sharnick’s debt for the care and oversight they provided to Samantha. When an ocean separates you from the most important treasure of your life, you are glad to have Mary and Wayne Sharnick involved.
